The Human Rights Campaign kicked off the Americans for Marriage Equality Campaign on Wednesday. The campaign is to bring more of an insight to Americans on why marriage equality is important for our country.
The campaign has started with a video from New Jersey mayor Cory Booker. HRC is hoping to have many notable figures add to the list & lend their support as well. From athletes to politicians, it may help get the conversation started across the nation.
Nearly half of the country supports Gay Marriage which is great & all but what about other issues in the LGBT community? Even if HRC gets as many celebrities as they want to support gay marriage, doesn't mean it will make it legal. It is different in every state.
Here in Oregon, Basic Rights Oregon has already launched a similar campaign over a year ago. There is still much work to do in educating & convincing voters to do the right thing. This is a battle that will be for each state separately. It is going to take members of the LGBT community to step up & take a stand if we want the same rights as everyone else. http://www.basicrights.org/programs/marriage-equality/
I personally think HRC should be focusing on why over half of the country do not have bills that protect us in the everyday life. Twenty one states plus Washington D.C. outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation. That means 29 other states are behind. Fifteen states including Washington D.C. outlaw discrimination based on gender identity or expression. What's up with the 35 other states?
I do hope with this campaign, it will help those not part of the LGBT community think of other rights we simply do not have. How could they if the word is not out? It is up to everyone who stands for human rights not just LGBT rights to pay attention & stand. We can do better but it all starts with conversation.
