A change within our community

This morning, I attended the African American Alliance Breakfast. The PFLAG Portland Black Chapter hosted the breakfast this morning to spread awareness on the importance of PFLAG Black Chapter's existence. It was a great turnout this morning, & great feedback from others that attended as well.

It's always good to see our community get together & focus on discussions needed within the community. The main topic of discussion was definitely keeping an open dialogue within our black community on GLBT issues. It is very important to keep the conversation going & fresh, so people can understand the importance of acceptance.

I believe people are scared of what they don't know. That is why there are so many stigmas & stereotypes within our community when it comes to our gay brothers & sisters. Passing the knowledge to one another is a very powerful thing & when we embrace that knowledge & use it for a good casue it can also be a beautiful thing as well.

It is unfortunate how too many of our young brothers & sisters are being discriminated against in school. Black, white, latino, asain, all queers of color face the same ugly fight. According to GLSEN's National Climate Survey, nearly 9 out of 10 students experienced harrassment at school. Even worse, nearly two thirds felt unsafe because of their sexual orientation. This is why GSA's (Gay- Straight Alliances) are very important in our schools. We all know how kids can be, but most importantly, kids react to the environment they are in. We have an opportunity to change that.

It felt really good to discuss these matter this morning but we have to do more. Someone pointed out that we need to be more visible in the community & I couldn't agree more. There are many out there fighting the good fight but I feel as if there was more of a presence to pass the knowledge, we can help change somone's mind who isn't educated on the GLBT community.

Thank to all who showed up this morning & I will definitely be at the next African American Alliance Breakfast!
