I'm always excited for new movies to come, given the fact that there hasn't been that many movies that have caught my eye.
So many great roles to come but more of the biopics are turning up like roses!
Mary J. Blige is still in works to play Nina Simone. I was a little weary at first when I heard this but Mary J. Blige did a good job in her small role in Prison Song. If you haven't seen the movie, you must add it to your Netflix! A great drama starring Q-Tip in a surprising acting role. The Nina Simone biopic has been in the talks for a while, so hopefully it jumps off soon. I love listening to Nina all day, everyday. Hopefully Mary J. can pull it off.
In other news, Jennifer Hudson is definitely out to play the role of Aretha Franklin. Originally, Aretha wanted Halle Berry to play her. What?! I don't know why, I love Halle but I can't see her playing Aretha. Well apparently Halle thought the same because when Aretha's team reached out, she turned it down. Stating she cannot sing & didn't think she can live up to the role. Thank God. Aretha Franklin owns all writes to her biopic & can choose whoever she wants. Jennifer Hudson stated recently that she would be honored to play her in the recent Jet magazine issue. I think Jennifer will be a perfect choice! Jennifer's new movie will hit the theaters this fall as she portrays Winnie Mandela in a biopic. I'm not sure about this one but I will be there to check it out!Although Fantasia was beat out for the role of Effie in Dreamgirls, she is set to play Mahalia Jackson in the upcoming movie about her life. The movie is set to come out in December. I'm not too familiar with Fantasia's acting work besides her playing herself in a Lifetime movie about herself! The director was impressed with her work in The Color Purple Broadway show, so he cast her right away. Well good luck Fannie! Her name was also out there for the Aretha Franklin movie.
Marlon Wayans is set to play Richard Pryor in the upcoming movie about his life. I'm a little excited to see this. I've always been a Marlon Wayans fan becuase he can deliver the comedy & the drama. We shall see!
In sad movie news, they are remaking The Bodyguard! WTF?! When I heard about this a couple of weeks ago, I thought it would never happen but they are really pushing for it. This is a movie that should not be touched! Whitney did an amazing job & no one can hold a candle to it. Why would they even try? This was always one of my favorite movies. The original took almost twenty years to get off the ground. Yup! Originally it was given to Diana Ross in the early seventies & Steve McQueen as her bodyguard. Diana turned it down because it had too much profanity in it & it didn't fit her image at the time. Kevin Costner ended up playing the role originally for McQueen & he even wanted Princess Diana to play her. She was in talks but never responded. Then it got in the hands of Whitney & the rest was history. The Bodyguard is still the highest selling soundtrack of all time, selling over 42 million copies worldwide. I dont think it can be redone. They are always messing up a classic!
