In September of 2010, Eddie Long, the minister of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church of Lithonia,GA was accused of sexual abuse by four young men: Anthony Flagg, Spencer LaGrande, Jamal Parris, & Maurice Robinson who were part of his youth program. They accused Long of using his influence for sexual relations. From hotel suites, clothing, & even paid travel expenses.
In my opinion, it should go to trial. Eddie Long made the mistake of speaking publicly to his church just only a couple of weeks after the accusations. Claiming people are trying to bring him down but he will rise above. Big mistake! When you're accused of such a thing, you should keep quiet.
Eddie Long has preached many anit-gay sermons & also led a march in 2004 against sem sex marriage in Atlanta. Needless to say, he's not a friend of the gay community.
I can't stand it when pastors use that in their sermon. I guess he forgot we are all God's children & no one is above the other.
Of course he still continues to lead his congregation in Georgia. What saddens me is that these kids looked up to him at one point as a mentor or father figure. By his denial & openly against the gay community, I feel he is distancing himself from his own congregation. Whether pastors want to believe it or not, gay people go to church too. Some of them are memebers of their church, yet they are quick to judge. What a shame, when a gay person feels as if they can only turn to the chruch for answers, yet they see & hear what a pastor feels about them, where can they go?
I really hope this sparks more conversation on acceptance not just in the churches but the community as a whole. This is something you cannot just turn your head away from.
